Recognizing this, Sierra Leone’s Deputy Minister of Communications, Technology and Innovation, Mr. Ibrahim Sannoh, addressed the pressing issue at a recent convention on cybercrime workshop. 

The event brought together key stakeholders to discuss the Budapest Convention, a crucial international framework designed to combat cyber threats.

Delivering the keynote, the Deputy Minister highlighted Sierra Leone’s commitment to this international accord as a crucial element in the collective fight against cyber threats. underscoring the pivotal role of policymakers and emphasising the importance of promoting awareness about the Budapest Convention.

Mr. Sannoh stressed the importance of open dialogue and collaboration among stakeholders, stating “Through open dialogue and collaboration, we can identify, formulate effective policies and bolster our ability to respond to cyber incidents.”

In his words “This holistic perspective underscores the need for a comprehensive strategy that goes beyond legal frameworks, focusing on practical solutions and cooperative efforts,” a symbol of shared dedication to securing our digital future. 

Mr. Sannoh’s statements echoed the significance of public awareness as a potent tool in countering cyber threats. He emphasized that through informed and engaged citizens, nations can create a resilient defence against digital threats

“By raising awareness about the Budapest Convention and the broader implications of cyber threats, Sierra Leone aims to empower its citizens to be vigilant and proactive in safeguarding the digital landscape,” he noted.

The Budapest Convention, also known as the Convention on Cybercrime, encourages countries to come together, exchange ideas, and collectively address the challenges posed by cybercrime. Also, it represents a commitment to international cooperation and a recognition that no single nation can combat cyber threats in isolation.

Sierra Leone’s endorsement of this convention reflects the nation’s dedication to fostering a secure digital environment. By actively participating in initiatives like these, the country aims to strengthen its defences against cybercrime and contribute to the collective efforts on a global scale, symbolizing its dedication to creating a resilient digital future, where collaboration, awareness, and effective policy making are key pillars in safeguarding against the ever-evolving landscape of cyber threats.

Engagement between the Ministry of Communications, Technology, and Innovation and the employees of the national telecom company holds paramount importance in fostering a harmonious and sustainable telecommunications ecosystem. 

Evidently, the Minister of Communications Technology and Innovation, Madam Salima Monorma Bah, alongside her Deputy, Mr. Ibrahim Sannoh, and Deputy Minister of Information and Civic Education, Mr. Yusuf Keketoma Sandy, in a significant stride towards fostering collaboration and addressing critical issues, directly impacting the staff’s well-being and the overall viability of the national telecom company, engaged in a vital dialogue with the staff members of Sierratel, Sierra Leone’s national telecommunications provider, charting a course for a more robust and prosperous national telecom landscape and, reinforcing its status as a national priority. 

Minister Bah, in her statement, emphasized the importance of maintaining continuous engagement with company representatives to discern actionable steps for resolving pressing issues. The backlog of payments to staff, a concern already in the process of being addressed, was acknowledged by the Minister as a challenge that cannot persist indefinitely. She urged collective decisions to revitalize Sierratel, highlighting the symbiotic relationship between the sustainability of the telecom company and the well-being of its staff.

She maintained “As a national carrier we need to continue these engagements to see from the staff what can be done to move these pressing issues forward.”

Reaffirming her dedication to Sierratel, Minister Bah assured the staff that their concerns are at the forefront of the government’s agenda. 

Deputy Minister Sandy, implored the staff to alter their perspectives, underlining the government’s commitment to finding effective solutions. He added “I encourage all to embrace a new perspective in how you perceive the governments approach to your concerns. Let me assure you, Minister Bah holds SierraTel’s best interest close to heart.”

During the dialogue, Sierratel workers candidly raised concerns impacting both their personal well-being and the overall development of the telecom company. Despite these challenges, there was an expression of appreciation for the opportunity to engage with government officials and a hopeful anticipation for positive outcomes in the future. 

Minister Bah responded to the concerns raised, assuring the staff of the government’s unwavering dedication to resolving issues and steering Sierratel towards a sustainable future.

Emphasizing that, “Regardless of the decisions we make, our commitment to addressing SierraTel’s issues and our continuous communication with the staff will remain unwavering,” Deputy Minister Sannoh, expressed gratitude to the staff for their patience and understanding.

The collaborative effort witnessed during this engagement between government officials and Sierratel staff signifies a commitment to finding practical solutions that will revitalize the national telecommunications sector.
